Nao’s Story

It all started when I happened to come across Dress for Success in a Google search.

At the time, I was in the middle of a very difficult chapter in my life. I had recently finished school and was trying to find a career-related job in Canada, but the process was harder than I had imagined. Each application seemed to highlight how much I didn’t know, and rejection emails quickly became a regular part of my week. What made things even more difficult was that most of my professional experience and skills came from overseas, and I often wondered if all of that meant nothing here in Canada. Writing a resume was especially daunting. Where I come from, resumes typically focus on tasks and responsibilities, rather than accomplishments and personal contributions, so emphasizing my achievements felt unfamiliar and uncomfortable.

The Dress For Success Community Was So Welcoming

Compared to other services I had found online, Dress for Success Vancouver felt approachable and welcoming. I can’t pinpoint exactly what drew me in, but I remember feeling a small spark of hope just from reading about their programs. I decided to try their resume review service, curious to see if it could help me present my experience in a way that would resonate with Canadian employers.

The moment I attended the resume service appointment, I felt genuinely welcomed and encouraged. The volunteer who guided me pointed out many strengths in my resume that I had never noticed before. Her thoughtful feedback helped me see my accomplishments with fresh eyes, and gave me the confidence to take the next step: joining the Volunteer to Work program. When I attended the volunteer orientation, the warm, uplifting atmosphere immediately made me feel included, I felt inspired, and quickly signed up for my shifts.

Thursdays quickly became my anchor. I started volunteering as a sorter, a role that at first seemed unrelated to my career goals, but over time it became much more meaningful.

One volunteer in particular, Lisa, made a tremendous impact on me. She was a long-time volunteer who knew everyone in the community and introduced me to many of them. Her warmth and openness helped me feel comfortable and welcomed from the very beginning. I tend to be shy and often find it hard to initiate conversations in new groups, but watching Lisa interact with others and seeing her approachability gave me the courage to start talking with people myself. Through these conversations, I learned about the diverse backgrounds and the challenges that other volunteers faced. These interactions uplifted and inspired me to persevere in my own journey.

Over the weeks, I noticed a shift in myself.

Dress For Success Gave Me Confidence to Build My Network

Before Dress for Success Vancouver, I carried a heaviness from constant job rejections, and I often avoided talking about my life because I feared being judged or feeling like a failure. I found myself constantly comparing my progress to others, even though I knew it wasn’t helpful. In the Volunteer to Work program, every small step I took was acknowledged and celebrated. Even sorting donations, something I initially thought unrelated to my career, became an opportunity to rebuild my confidence. I began to feel comfortable opening up about myself and sharing my experiences, which reinvigorated my motivation to pursue my goals.

As my confidence grew, I started to see real changes in my life. I felt more at ease speaking with people and presenting myself authentically. I realized that no matter the task, putting in effort and engaging fully could lead to growth in ways I hadn’t anticipated. This realization gave me the courage to continue my job search with renewed determination. Eventually, I applied for a full-time role in Ottawa, and I was offered the position. Today, I use the skills and self-assurance I gained through Dress for Success Vancouver every day in my work.

Volunteering At Dress For Success Vancouver Helped Me Grow Personally and Professionally

Reflecting on my time at Dress for Success Vancouver, I can say that volunteering was transformative. At first, I hadn’t expected much beyond contributing in a small way, but through weekly participation, I regained confidence, strengthened my communication skills, and found a sense of belonging that I had been missing. I came to understand that the community and support I found at Dress for Success Vancouver was not just about finding a job. It was about rediscovering my own value and the power of small, consistent steps toward personal growth.

The lessons I learned extend far beyond the workplace. I now approach challenges with a sense of optimism and resilience, and I carry the kindness and encouragement I received into my daily interactions. The Dress for Success Vancouver community showed me that progress isn’t always linear, but with support and determination, even modest steps can lead to significant change. My experience reminded me of the power of community and reinforced that sometimes all it takes is one encouraging space to help someone believe in themselves again.

Joining Dress for Success Vancouver’s Volunteer to Work program wasn’t just a step in my career journey, it was a turning point in my life. It helped me reconnect with my confidence, embrace my achievements, and recognize the value I bring to any environment. For that, I will always be grateful.
