The Small Decision That Changed My Life
What started as interview support slowly became something much bigger for me – a journey of confidence, connection, and eventually, giving back. At the time, I didn’t realise that one small decision could lead to such a meaningful shift in how I saw myself and my place in a new country.
Two years ago, I came to Canada as an international student with my family. I was juggling a lot all at once – adjusting to a new country, studying, trying to rebuild my career, while also being a wife and a mother. I had years of education and professional experience behind me, yet arriving here made all of that feel distant. In many situations, I felt reduced to being “new,” and over time, that feeling slowly affected my confidence and sense of identity.
Dress For Success: The Opportunity To Rebuild
During that phase, I came across Dress for Success Vancouver through my college’s page for international students. I remember reading about their services and feeling curious and hopeful at the same time. It felt like a space that understood women who were rebuilding their professional lives while carrying personal responsibilities. Something about their approach felt respectful and human, and that’s what made me book an appointment.
Dressing Services Gave Me The Confidence I Needed
My first Dressing Services appointment was for an interview I had coming up, and my experience stayed with me long after that day. It wasn’t just about choosing an outfit. The stylist I worked with took the time to talk to me about my background, my experience, and the role I was preparing for. She listened carefully, reassured me, and treated me like someone who already belonged in professional spaces. That interaction made me feel seen and valued.
Walking into that interview, I felt more confident and grounded. That confidence didn’t stop there – it carried into how I introduced myself, how I spoke to people, and how I started approaching networking opportunities. That one appointment helped me show up differently, not just for that interview, but for many conversations and opportunities that followed.
Continuing My Dress For Success Journey: From Client to Workshop Leader
As my journey with Dress for Success Vancouver continued, I later had the opportunity to lead a resume-building workshop. In that session, I shared something very real from my own experience: every job I’ve had in Canada came through networking and connections, not just online applications. Speaking openly about this felt important, because it was honest and practical, and it reflected what had truly worked for me.
Leading that workshop felt like a full-circle moment. Standing there and sharing my journey made me realise how far I had come. It reminded me that I wasn’t just a student or a newcomer trying to find my way. I was a professional, a mother, a wife, and someone with lived experience and insight worth sharing with others.
Dress For Success Gave Me The Skills I Needed To Become A Leader
Today, I work in leadership roles within the community sector, supporting newcomers and immigrants as they navigate employment, settlement, and belonging – many of the same challenges I once faced myself. Being able to give back to the same community that supported me feels deeply meaningful. The lessons I learned through Dress for Success Vancouver – about confidence, access, and the power of connection – continue to shape how I work and how I show up for my family and my community.
My journey isn’t finished. I am still learning, still growing, and still balancing the many roles I carry. But I move forward with a stronger sense of self now. I know that when women are supported with dignity and belief, they don’t just move ahead on their own – they create space and strength for others too.
