My name is Aitana López, I’m from Mexico, and I’ve been living in Canada for three years now. Today, I can say with a heart full of gratitude that my life has changed in the most beautiful way.
In Mexico, It Was Impossible to Be Myself
Before coming here, my reality in Mexico was very different. From a young age, it was hard for me to be myself. Out of fear and social pressure, I convinced myself it would be easier to live as a gay man, even though that wasn’t my truth. That disconnection from who I truly was led me to painful choices. I searched for comfort in the wrong places and eventually fell into addiction. I lost friends, jobs, relationships…but most of all, I lost myself.
One day I hit rock bottom and realized I needed to change. I gave up drugs on my own, through sheer willpower. It was hard, yes—but it was also the beginning of my true rebirth.
When I arrived in Canada, I discovered something I never imagined possible: I could finally be myself, without fear, without having to explain anything, without hiding. I found acceptance, kindness, and respect. People welcomed me with open arms, and for the first time, I felt like I truly belonged.
Dress For Success Helped Me Dress As The Woman I Am
One of the most meaningful moments on this journey was finding Dress for Success Vancouver. They helped me with something that may seem simple, but meant the world to me: learning how to dress as the woman I am. They guided me, supported me, and most importantly, made me feel comfortable, safe, and respected. Even though I don’t speak English, they were incredibly patient and kind. Thanks to them, I discovered that clothing can be empowering—like armor to face the world as your authentic self.
Today, I feel stronger. I’m still on this journey—hormone therapy, physical changes, emotions, dysphoria, challenges—it’s all part of the process. It hasn’t been easy, but nothing compares to the pain of not being able to live your truth. The wounds from my past are still there, but they no longer define me. Now, I’m rebuilding myself with self-love, step by step.
Thank you, Dress for Success Vancouver and I Belong Program at MOSAIC for being part of this transformation. Thank you, Canada, for embracing me unconditionally. I am Aitana López, a proud trans woman, and I’m finally happy living my truth.
