My journey to Canada started out of curiosity. I had a great job in my home country, a wonderful circle of friends, and a supportive family. But deep inside, I kept asking myself:
“What if? What if I was missing something? What if I could start over and build another version of myself? What if time passed and I ended up regretting not taking the leap?”
In September 2024, with those questions in mind, my best friend and I packed our suitcases and traveled 8,817km away from home. It was just the two of us, stepping into a life of uncertainty.
Arriving in Vancouver and Jumping In Head First
From the moment I arrived, I threw myself into every opportunity I could find. In my very first week, I attended conferences, networking events, newcomer programs, and even found a supportive mentor. My calendar had no empty slots, I was determined to build my references, expand my network, and find the job I deserved, all at the same time. It was during this intense period of hustling that I discovered Dress for Success Vancouver, and that moment changed everything.
Newcomer Suiting Appointment: Joy, Confidence and Belonging
I still remember the day I attended my Newcomer Suiting appointment: the joy, the confidence, the sense of belonging. I was so overwhelmed with gratitude that I immediately video-called my friends and family to share the excitement. At that moment, I knew I wanted to find a way to give back. I wanted other women to feel the same empowerment that I had just experienced.
Within a week, I became part of the Dress for Success Vancouver community, as a client and as a volunteer. Whenever I wasn’t applying for jobs or networking, I was at Dress for Success Vancouver, first helping as a sorter and later as a stylist. Going there every week became my therapy. My only goal was to make sure that every woman I met left with a smile, feeling more confident and empowered than when she walked in.
Four months into my journey in Canada, after what felt like endless job applications and unanswered emails, I went to Dress for Success Vancouver for my styling shift, hoping to get my usual boost of energy. That day, I met another volunteer named Lisa. A simple, spontaneous conversation about Morocco and my journey to Vancouver led to an unexpected opportunity. Two weeks later, I landed the job I had long lost hope for.
Now I Give Back to Dress For Success
The equation is simple: Dress for Success Vancouver gave to me, I gave back, and it gave back to me. And the cycle continues, it’s a butterfly effect!
Looking back, I realize that what truly made a difference wasn’t just the 500+ job applications or the 40+ networking events I attended, it was the community. Dress for Success Vancouver didn’t just give me professional attire; it gave me confidence, connections, and a sense of belonging.
Giving back became my way of moving forward. And in doing so, I have found opportunities and a deeper understanding of the power of support and kindness.
My journey started with uncertainty, but today, I stand here knowing that no one succeeds alone. The smallest act of giving can create a ripple effect, opening doors in ways we never expect.
I am living proof of that.
